Hauser & Wirth Menorca will open on July 17 with an exhibition by Mark Bradford

The crisis of the pandemic has not managed to stop the project of the Swiss gallery Hauser & Wirth in Menorca, which has just announced that it will open its art center on July 17 in the old naval hospital of Illa del Rei, located in the port of Mahón. The inaugural exhibition of the new 1,500-square-meter space will feature African-American artist Mark Bradford and will also feature an outdoor tour of sculptures by Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, and Franz West, among others.

The new 1,500-square-meter space will have eight galleries, a store and a restaurant

Hauser & Wirth Menorca will be located in the buildings adjacent to the old hospital that was built during the English rule, and the restoration work has been carried out by the Argentine architect Luis Laplace based in Paris. It will have eight galleries, a shop and a restaurant. The space is part of a group of abandoned buildings from the 18th century, in addition to the archaeological remains of a 5th century basilica.

The exhibition by Mark Bradford (Los Angeles, 1961) will in fact be the second to be held at Hauser & Wirth Menorca after the virtual show that opened last May and which, thanks to HWVR (Hauser & Wirth Virtual Reality) technology , it was possible to walk through its spaces and view the works in a digital 3D environment. “For the last year, it seemed that we lived on Mars, masked and disguised, two meters away, on immobile terrain. But we must keep moving, recognize that instability is part of the course of history,” says the artist.

Hauser & Wirth, one of the most powerful and influential galleries in the world. It has headquarters in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York or Zurich, and the one in Menorca is its second foray into Spain after the agreement with the Chillida family to reopen and manage Chillida-Leku (Chillida’s place) in Hernani. For Manuela Wirth, owner of the gallery with her husband Iwan Wirth, “the Isla del Rey is an extraordinary place, with a wild nature, a unique light and landscape, and a fascinating history. During the last five years, we have worked for to create a cultural center in Menorca, and the enthusiasm that both the Menorcan community and our family of artists have shown us, has encouraged us at all times “.

The Laplace restoration project uses traditional construction materials (curved tile roof and terrazzo flooring made with local stone, original wooden beams …) and has taken into account different sustainability protocols such as the collection of rainwater, a system to reuse water for soil irrigation, and air conditioning with an energy efficiency system for restored buildings. The exterior has been designed by the landscaper Piet Oudolf.
